Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer shone as a sweeper, preventing Germany from falling behind on several occasions. It wasn't until extra time that André Schürrle finally broke the deadlock (92nd minute), followed by Mesut Özil (119th minute), before Algeria pulled one back. Germany narrowly advanced to the quarterfinals.
